How to Rent a Car & Where to Go for Your Next Road Trip

This is a guest post from the team at Auto Europe, especially useful if you’re planning to rent a car for your road trip. In the next couple of years I’m hoping to go on one of my own! Let me know if you’ve got anything planned and if you’re going solo. Enjoy…

Exploring the roads of Europe to experience the true culture and history makes for an excellent holiday experience, but organising transportation for your ideal itinerary can seem daunting.

Many travellers opt for multiple public transport options, including buses, trains, and taxis, mistakenly believing that they’re saving money by forgoing the exploratory freedoms afforded by a car rental. Travellers relying on public transport often find themselves dealing with the hurdles of rigid routes, overcrowding, set schedules, and ever-changing seasonal fares.

Surprising to many, renting a car in Europe is often most affordable transportation option to enjoy a self-guided trip and allows for exploring off the beaten track.  The key to a road-trip-of-a-lifetime is selecting the right vehicle and choosing the best spot to explore.

Proud of our over 60 years experience, here are our tips for both!

Rental tips for first timers

Choosing the Proper Vehicle

The most important consideration when renting a car is what size vehicle will best suit your passenger and luggage capacity needs. If you’re planning on travelling in a large group with both checked and carry-on luggage, an SUV or passenger van may be your best option, as they have comfortable seating for between 5-9, and large trunk areas for excess luggage.

On the other hand, smaller groups or a solo traveller will enjoy the top-tier fuel economy and sporty driving feel of a smaller, compact or economy vehicle. When searching for a car rental online, be sure to check each vehicles approximate luggage capacity and the number of doors so you can choose the best car for your trip.

Choosing the Right Insurance Options

Many frequently asked questions about the car rental process are in regards to insurance options, and for good reason, as there are a variety of different options depending on where you’re planning to rent the vehicle, and the type of credit card coverage you may already have.

In Italy for instance, full insurance coverage (CDW – Collision Damage Waiver) is a mandatory purchase with your rental contract, where as in the rest of Europe, CDW and Theft Protection may be covered by your credit card company.  No Deductible or Refundable Deductible options are also available to increase your peace of mind while travelling.

Potential fees

Everyone wants to find the best deals on when planning trips abroad, but some rental car costs may not always be what they seem.

Additional fees, taxes, and surcharges might be payable upon pick up or drop off, so be sure to review your terms & conditions carefully to ensure you understand the total cost of the rental.

Top European road trip destinations

With driving in mind, choosing a destination to explore the most exciting part of the planning process. Below we’ve highlighted three of our favourite European spots, perfect for exploring the area on your own in a comfortable vehicle.

Forum, Rome

Northern Italy

Northern Italy is far and away one of the most idyllic and breathtaking places to explore, with a wide variety of exciting cities to visit, including Milan, Venice, Turin and Rome.

Northern Italy has many diverse landscapes, from the mountainous Alps to the Mediterranean Sea – all most easily accessible by car. Italy’s northern regions are all interconnected by a vast expressway system that snakes through breathtaking alpine vistas, lush river valleys, and cliffside coastal overlooks, allowing you to craft your own personalised itinerary and see more of Italy’s unique landscapes and histories in a single trip!

The French Riviera

Nearly every destination in France, from the rocky coastline of Brittany to the historic streets of Paris, are rife with holiday potential, but none really compare to the majesty that is southern France’s Cote d’Azur – also know as the French Riviera.

The Riviera’s coastline is dotted with fantastic cities and quaint hamlets, including Nice and Marseille. With a car rental you can traverse the coastline with ease, experiencing the full breadth of the Riviera’s attractions while also enjoying scenic views of the Mediterranean sea and its beaches.

Dublin city Luftbild

Hands down the most conducive landscape for taking to the road and adventuring by car, Ireland’s rolling hills and verdant countryside are absolutely gorgeous and peppered with centuries old architecture, ancient castles, and stunning natural rock formations. These are all accessible along winding country roads, or even more conveniently along Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Way.

Whether you start in Dublin, Belfast, Shannon, or Cork, exploring Ireland in-depth is a once in a lifetime experience.

So, pick the car that best suits your itinerary, pack your sense of adventure, and hit the road!

I like what this article recommends about choosing a good vehicle at the start. It makes sense that renting a car that would work well for who and what you’re taking could be helpful. It’s something I’ll have to remember to make sure there are no problems trying to fit everything.
