When you live in a busy city like London it’s really hard to get time to do anything outside of work and play. That makes having a plan to eat the right foods all the more important.
Staying away from saturated fats and processed foods will not only make you feel better, it’s one of the best ways to lower cholesterol levels, give you an energy boost and make you more efficient in your everyday life.
With that in mind let’s check out a few top tips that’ll help you eat healthily in London.
As with anything, when you’re super busy it’s all too easy to let things fall by the wayside. However, if you plan ahead you are much more likely to get everything done and that includes making sure you eat healthily.
When you do get the time to check, have a look in your cupboards, fridge and freezer to see what you’ve got and haven’t got, and make a shopping list. Order what you need online and you’ll save time versus going to the supermarket; just make sure you know exactly what you need to plan your meals ahead.
Make a meal plan
Lists work! Write it down and you’re far more likely to achieve your goals. As with above it’s all about preparation and, in actual fact, it’s best to do a meal plan before you check to see what’s needed.
Take a few moments out of your schedule to set a daily, weekly, fortnightly or monthly plan. Once you’ve set up your first one you’ll have a template to work from.
Snacking and not missing breakfast
Start your day by missing breakfast and you’re already behind. Sluggishness, lack of concentration and hunger pangs will hit pretty quickly and you’ll want to reach for anything to eat quickly… something that’s often sugary. However, start your day with a slow-release carbohydrate like porridge oats with berries and you’ll be energised and ready for the day.
I’ve talked at length about being prepared and meal planning, and that’s true for snacks too. Make sure you pack healthy snacks in your bag and eat them at regular intervals.
Make healthy restaurant choices
It’s inevitable that you’re going to go out for food and drink a fair bit when you work and/or live in London. That doesn’t mean you can’t eat healthily though. Use your knowledge to pick healthy dishes, ask for dressings to be removed if you don’t want them and replace fat-laden sides with lighter options. Better still, be the one who chooses the restaurant so you know exactly what to expect.
Here are three great healthy restaurants to visit in London:
Ethos: This self-service vegetarian restaurant in Oxford Circus offers a delicious way to get your five a day, with dishes from around the globe.
Prawn on the Lawn: A seafood restaurant in Islington, Prawn on the Lawn prides itself on providing the freshest of seasonal dishes. In fact, the menu is so fresh it can change daily, dependent on what the fishermen have caught.
Granger & Co.: Headed up by Australian celebrity chef Bill Grainer, this King’s Cross eatery is a prime destination for healthy eaters looking for amazing flavours from around the world.
You can always eat healthily, whether you live in a sleepy village or amongst the hustle and bustle of London. If you’re looking for ways to lower cholesterol, choose healthy restaurant options or pick and choose when you eat; it’s all in the planning!
