9 Best City Breaks For Solo Female Travellers

Travelling solo is a highly educational and edifying experience and one which more and more women are choosing. It’s life changing – going away from your comfort zone, and exploring a place far from home, all by yourself. Indeed, there’s something fantastic about discovering the world for yourself and relying entirely on your own skills in a new place.

If you cannot manage a long trip, don’t worry. Just take a short break and travel to one of these cities, which offer the best breaks for the solo female traveller:

1. Tokyo, Japan

Unlike Japan’s smaller cities and the rural side, Tokyo is accustomed to travellers. You’ll find this city safe and what’s more, the signs are written in Roman letters and even in English. Enjoy Tokyo’s unique sense of fashion and the anime fever that infects everything that people do here.

Check out anime gadgets and stuff at Akihabara. Do some clothes shopping at Harajuku or Shibuya 109, a huge shopping mall. For some truly amazing gastronomical experience, visit Asakusa.

2. New York City, USA

New York City, a place of joy that never sleeps and excites on all levels. Pick up a pass to the subway and you’re all set for a week’s easy travel to wherever you want to go, as long as you hold on to a map.

Check out the Times Square, the statue of Liberty, Broadway, Central Park, Coney Island, the Guggenheim Museum, and more. Hit the many fantastic cafes for the famous New York breakfast and brunch, including pancakes and waffles.

3. Paris, France

Paris, the city of romance is always a fantastic place for a solo female traveler. If all that romance in the air makes you feel lonely, don’t. Paris is a happening city, so enjoy going solo and check out the Eiffel tower, the Notre Dame, le Sacré Coeur and Arc de Triumph and the Louvre all on your own.

If you have time, visit the catacombs underneath Paris – they have their own unique history. Take a day trip to Versailles, where King Louis XIV reigned in his decadent splendour. Visit the Les Marais district for some great food and top places to shop. Paris is well known for its macaroons and its incredible bread, so indulge in both.

4. Helsinki, Finland

If you’re into architecture, museums and food, head straight to Helsinki.  It’s a safe city, and the churches here are so exquisite, you’ll want to linger on with your camera. Visit the Dom, the Oespenski cathedral, and the Temppeliaukio-church, known fondly as the rock-church. Explore the design museum. Travel along the Tooloo Bay in a boat. Visit the Opera Hall and the Finlandia Hall if you love architecture. Want to try out some exclusive moose and reindeer dishes? You’re in the right place for it! 

5. Copenhagen, Denmark

Copenhagen is known to be a bit more expensive than other cities, but it is incredible safe and absolutely recommended for solo women travelers. There are so many canals in the city that the best way to see all the sights is by boat. Check out the multi-colored houses of Nyhavn; gaze at the beautiful royal palace and fall in love with the mermaid statue. Check out little Amsterdam. Feel the easy pace of the city and do some shopping in the Strøget district. That’s where all the fashionable ones flock to. Head to the Street Food market for some cool food on the cheap, to be eaten alongside the lovely river.

6. Barcelona, Spain

Great weather, splendid sunshine, magnificent architecture and millennia of history. Want more? Rent a bike and check out the amazing architectural buildings designed by Antoni Gaudi. Barcelona’s nightlife is something to write home about.

Make a point to visit the Sagrada Familia, Casa Mila, Casa Batlló and Park Güell. Barcelona’s landscapes are verdant and beautiful with small meandering lanes, perfect for biking.

7. Melbourne, Australia

Melbourne is the home of coffee culture and cool restaurants. This city is an out and out foodie paradise. Take a trip with Puffing Billy Railway, and visit the Ponyfish Island for one of their refreshing drinks. If you’re into sports, it pays to visit the National Sports Museum.

Like to do some vintage shopping? Head to the Nicholas building and visit the Retrostar outlet there for things that your grandma would have worn, but is back in fashion today!

8. Singapore

Singapore is a safe, beautiful city and one of the best cities for a beginner solo trip for a woman. Because this is such a safe city, there are many women who plan their first solo trip to Singapore. Be sure to sign up for the Singapore Night Safari and enjoy watching nocturnal creatures go about their daily lives. Explore Chinatown and Little India to your heart’s content. Explore Singapore’s gardens – the futuristic Supertree Grove, the Botanic Gardens, McRitchie Reservoir and others. Visit the Peranakan Museum for a quick study on the Peranakan culture.

Make a visit to the thrilling Sentosa Island with its many theme parks such as Universal Studios and Sentosa Park. If this sounds appealing, you can apply for a Singapore visa and start planning your perfect trip.

9. Dublin

Dublin is an expensive city to travel, but the sights and the culture and of course, the Guinness make it all worth it! Be sure to tour the famous Guinness brewery, the Guinness Storehouse, where you can book a tour which includes a glass of Guinness and an incredible view of the city.

Then, tour the Dublin Castle, visit the Christ Church Cathedral and stroll through the lovely St. Stephen’s Green. Check out the Little Museum of Dublin where you can study the history of Dublin.
